How do I fill my schedule without burning myself out?
Have certain weekly events scheduled on certain days. Wednesdays, I have a meeting with my support group at church. Every other Monday, I go out to dinner with my dad. Thursdays I go visit my dad. Have certain days free in case something comes up, but scheduling events on specific days that repeat- or even having certain days be activity days- is definitely an excellent method.

Did you ever sign up for a general education class just to fill out your schedule and then had that class change the entire direction of your studies?
I took a course in the history of architecture because I was in a hurry to get my BA since I had been admitted to a first-tier school for my graduate program. But I obviously had to have a BA by the time I arrived at the major, which meant I had to do my senior year’s work in one semester. One course I was credited with was off-catalogue and self-directed. I was examining how the maxim “form follows function” worked in application. It was tremendous fun. I focused on a particular architect who was at first most cooperative, providing me with copies of blue prints and such. Then, armed with research and a lot of paper, I went into the field with camera and recorder and interviewed the people who were actually using the buildings supposedly built according to the maxim. My query: how well did the buildings work?My best example was a small-town museum built by the alleged master. The large entry atrium had a curved wall on one side, and the entrance doors were surrounded by glass windows. The sculptures and paintings on display for the opening were selected by the architect for the grand opening, but unfortunately did not include any paintings that could be hung on the curved wall without being blocked to eliminate the problem of the curve. Plus the main piece of sculpture wouldn’t fit through the delivery area, or the front doors. The entire frame and glass of the entry had to be removed to permit the installation and removal. And there were other, less significant problems.I tried to include several types of office buildings and had a wonderful time doing the field research for all this. My conclusion was that while form following function was nice from an artistic point of view, it did not match well with the physical reality of commercial structures. The course conclusion and my grade were to be determined by a visual presentation and lecture to a faculty committee. I did it and received a high grade. I then wrote a letter of gratitude to the architect and enclosed a transcript of my comments, including the problems with the museum opening. I really didn’t expect anyone would actually read it, but I suppose someone did. The master’s assistant called me and demanded a return of all the papers and prints I had, and forbade me to contact the master ever again. Thin skin, I suppose. But it was instructional on several levels. I received my BA with summa and went on to graduate school, then to law school, then to the courtroom. But I certainly never saw commercial architecture - or artists - in quite the same light.
